Write your SMS as an email with SMTP
Simple mail transfer protocol or SMTP was developed in the 1970s to facilitate the exchange of email messages; today SMS gateway SMTP APIs enable email messages to be converted into SMS messages and sent to a mobile handset. An industry standard for high volume SMS messaging from email servers, the SMTP API is commonly used for mobile notification alerts to convert messages from email to SMS.
Notification requirements can vary widely as to urgency, the degree of automation required and levels of sophistication required however many SMS gateway providers supply SMTP API connections for free (you pay for messages sent) and ensure that the connection process is simple – as simple as writing that email.
‘Email-to-SMS’ SMTP applications hold an advantage over traditional email messaging. An SMS message can reach anybody, anytime and anywhere in the world; they are delivered almost instantaneously and because they are delivered to a personal communication device that is nearly always on and with the intended recipient of the message, response times are quicker. All cellphones support SMS messaging so there are no data or handset limitations to hinder message delivery and people all over the world trust and use SMS technology.
Notification or SMS alerts are used by many organizations when they need to contact large groups of people timeously. This is particularly relevant for emergency response teams when different groups of people need to be co-ordinated for one event. By using ‘email to SMS’ SMTP application programming interfaces (API’s) one email message can be converted into SMS messages for the police, fire department, rescue services, traffic police – anyone and everyone that needs to be involved in the situation. Or the messages can be sent in batches if different instructions for different groups need to be given.
Applications of the SMTP API are not always as focused on immediate response & coordinate. In South Africa, online media group, News24, offers ‘Breaking News’ SMS alerts. They say, “Some news stories are too important to wait for the 7 o’clock news”. In another example, contract subscribers can sign up for Vodacom’s SMS alerts for news on a variety of subjects, including sports results, share prices, weather forecasts, news headlines and horoscopes. SMTP connections are ideal for bulk SMS sending. The potential for timeous SMTP API-enabled messaging is unlimited from business owners notifying employees of an upcoming staff meeting to airlines letting passengers know of possible flight delays.
If you’re looking for the SMS gateway API that works well with legacy and existing email messaging systems, is easy to use, maintenance free, affordable, enables message delivery tracking and auditing, then the SMTP API is the right choice to convert email to SMS.
